Painted Pepper RJ Mae Mae

Photos by: Cheryle Moore-Smith

Mae Mae…was a long bodied beautifully correct, tiny little doe with a wonderful, very collapsible mammary system, thin creamy skin, good sized teats with large orifices, nice division between the udder halves and an incredible will to milk. She was easy going, cute, funny and a good friend. I still after many years miss her very much. Mae Mae passed away from pneumonia on the hottest most humid summer day of that year…the type of weather that makes the environment ripe for pneumonia. It only took four hours from her first manifesting symptom until she passed. She left behind triplet bucklings that were only three weeks old and had never been offered a bottle. I thought to myself, “oh, boy, this is going to be a fight to get them to accept a bottle”. but thankfully, I was wrong about that. Amazingly, they all behaved as if they had been nursing on a bottle from day one! I like to think that Mae Mae was there in spirit telling her kids that everything was going to be okay and that they should just accept the bottle. That litter of triplet bucklings sired by Keidan Quinn were all gorgeous examples of the breed. Two out of the three went to other homes with new inexperienced breeders and they did not survive. The third buckling named Maenar Quinn stayed here with us to grow out and sire some kids for us before moving onto the Naissance herd where he lived to a respectable age and passed away in 2021.
